Welcome to Teaching English Through English I: How to Teach Reading, Writing and Speaking in English

Welcome to the Teaching English Through English I: How to Teach Reading, Writing and Speaking in English that is offered by PNU-OSU Joint TESOL program. This TESOL course is primarily designed for in-service and pre-service Korean English teachers to develop the literacy practices that are crucial for teaching reading, writing and speaking in English at the Korean public school context. This course will involve a series of lectures, workshops, group discussions, academic presentations and individual work in which students will be both improving their literacy skills and learning various ways of teaching those skills to different student population. During this course, each student will be required to read, write and present a variety of academic genre—including giving academic presentations, note-taking, doing critical reading, writing personal literacy narratives and using academic idioms in writing and speaking activities.

More specifically, this course aims to help Korean teachers build expertise in academic literacy skills and to help speak and write academically about topics related to English language teaching. During this course, we will refer to the scholarship done on second language reading and writing. In addition to learning the content in these articles, I want you to gain awareness of and be able to model the academic language used in these articles. This will be accomplished through various class activities such as analyzing the kinds of vocabulary items used in these academic articles or the kinds linguistic moves that the authors of these articles make. This course also aims to improve your speaking abilities in academic English. I want you to pick up certain rules and conventions to speak academically (e.g. how to make an argument, how to refute an argument, be able to give a professional presentation). To address this, we will together organize and participate into our 2nd PNU-OSU TESOL conference. The conference will take place at the end of our two weeks intensive course. This conference will not only give you an opportunity to display what you learnt in this program, but also to share your knowledge on English language learning and teaching with the PNU-OSU TESOL community.

The academic language goals of this course are:

1. to express your ideas clearly in academic English
2. to learn academic writing and speaking skills
3. to learn academic vocabulary
4. to be familiar with various communication styles
5. to gain self-confidence in using academic English
