Dear and wonderful class,
You did a remarkable job in your teaching reading and writing today. The activities you brought to class were innovative, and definitely illustrated the integrated nature of reading, writing and speaking. We will continue the teaching demonstrations on Monday.
You can post your reflections on your individual/co-teaching experiences here.
I hope that you all have a restfull weekend.
Dr.Seloni
P.S. Due to a glitch on the slideshare program, from now on I will send you the Power Point slides via email. Let me know if you don't receive the slides from me or are unable to open them.

Many thanks for all your participating in Mobu and Unice's teaching demonstration. Even I am feeling something lacking of it, it was helpful in my self motivation as a language learner and intending teacher. I was thinking I would be having a part of overview and pre reading, and then Unice would go on the intensive reading and writing, but we did not have rehearsal of co-teaching before the class for all that the article we prepared was about team-teaching. Please excuse over-time taken too.
ReplyDeleteOne of the reasons I pick this article is that we have already talked about NET issue of Korea negatively in our previous class. And I was also wondering whether team teaching is really effective and how the teaching procedure is followed. So the survey of HK's was quite interesting for me, and I could see the positive impact not only on students for learning foreign language but on teacher for professional development. The other reason is that I was not sure about teaching younger age for reading and writing activity. After saw others' teaching demonstration for younger students, some idea appealed to me. I am looking forward to others' demonstration left.
Have a fabulous weekend!
Mobu
Thanks for your reflections, Mobu. We have all enjoyed your teaching demonstration. I thought your directions were very clear and you made the students quite motivated by giving them a wide range of reading activities. Great Job!
ReplyDeleteI was nervous when I started my teaching demonstration because it was my first English teaching and we're running out of time.
ReplyDeleteI tried not to forget what I had to say and not to worry too much. I also tried to keep my voice loud and clear but a little bit slow so that my elementary students can understand my words easily. Even if the demonstration was just for 5 minutes, it took me hours and hours to prepare for. And the class was pretty interesting. I really enjoyed it. It made me long for being a English teacher more than ever.
I want to thank people who were acting as my students with enthusiasm. Of course, I also wanna thank you, Dr. Seloni.
Simon,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your reflection. I have no doubt that your students will enjoy your teaching. You used appropriate reading materials and activities. The age group with which you were working would certainly enjoy the visuals. Yes, you're right. The time was not enough to include everything you wanted to do with this level of students. In any event, we were impressed by what we've seen!
Keep up the good work,
Dr.Seloni
The most impressive teaching experience was the class that I made on last Friday, which is the first lesson in a professional way. Actually, it is hard to say that I was professional enough. Nevertheless, it was absolutely great experience to browse and regard my teaching philosophy. There was a kind of points that I should have carefully considered which would be really helpful my teaching skill afterward.
ReplyDeletePreparing the lesson, I noticed that integrating each section was a bit demanding. There are vast amount of materials but it doesn’t guarantee the quality of the materials. So I had to discriminate some certain materials among them, which are appropriate for my class.
After the lesson, I thought that I finished the class without any serious problem but there was something that did not make my class go smooth. Sometimes, I was wandering not to know what I was to do. At the beginning of the class, I made a sort of mistakes. I did not address objects of the lesson and unclear direction of my class produced confusion.
It was hard to manage students without clear respond. That is because I was not be able to recognize whether they fully understand the contents of the class. However, it is likely to happen with Korean students since they are not accustomed to express their intention toward teacher. In addition, I realize that it would be almost impossible to meet all students’ desire and needs of their work. I concern that is because each students have got different interest, linguistic schemas and ability to accomplish tasks that the teacher gives. Thus, teaching techniques I need to develop would be to encourage most students to participate actively.
One of my solutions for this matter is group discussion. When the students work on reading tasks, it is clear that they need to read an article individually in order to concentrate and grasp the contexts. Though, the group discussion would encourage the students to understand the article with variety angle of view. The ability to see the objects in a different way is really important especially, for reading. It makes students be able to consider the exact intention of the writer. Moreover, through the developing process of group discussion, the students can foster their communicative skills.
I received a feedback that I should use clear definition and give accurate and sophisticated information. Even though I am teaching language of English, the students could acquire knowledge of other subjects as well. Particularly, my target age of students will be about 4-7 years old which is the period that the children assimilate information as instant as they accept. Therefore, it is expected for the teachers to study and revise their knowledge.
Finally, this demonstration became an opportunity to consider about the teaching techniques focusing on students’ exact needs. In my case, right after the demonstration, it was very crucial and effective to supervise and have oral feedbacks on my teaching from colleagues. It is anticipated that would be helpful to cope with guaranteeing the good quality of my teaching.
I presented the lesson for the context of “Baby Names Over the Years” with Nichole. I think the theme of the passage was quite good for the 6th graders in elementary school. They might be interested in the English names. In this case, activities like making nicknames in English would useful for elicit students’ participation, but we didn’t do that. For explaining how to recognize the family names and first names, it would more helpful to use their real names. I think it could more easier to learn about it.
ReplyDeleteBecause of my lack of speaking skills and teaching experiences, my demonstration was imperfect, but my partner Nicole did a good job. However, I was highly motivated and thank for classmates’ active participations.
^^
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for watching my teaching demonstration.
It provided me a good opportunity to reflect on my teaching. I think that feedback from other members was also effective to improve my ability for teaching.
My teaching philosophy which is the most important thing to me is to help the children learn in comfortable environment.
It includes teaching methods, materials, activities that I have to prepare for the class.
Today, I recognized what I need to do more. I will make more activities with fun.
It was the first experience to me to reflect on my teaching.
I think reflection on teaching has value in teacher education programs.
First of all, thank you to you all for participating in my lesson~!^^
ReplyDeleteThrough this teaching demonstration, I have not only had chance to reflect on myself, but also had chance to know what other teachers would plan for their students and it was great experience for me.
Although I have planned my lesson plan as carefully as I could, I had some mistakes and by having comment about it helped me a lot.
I may make some mistakes even after I teach in real situation, but I think the important thing is to remember my passion and motivation in teaching all the time.
Thanks again to all classmates and to Dr Seloni too^^
I sorry that I was absent last Thursday, so I didn't know exactly what should I prepare for the presentation. So there were so many faults.
ReplyDeleteHowever I tried to do my best. Through this teaching demonstration, from preparation to presentation, I realize my teaching style and my weakness. It is really helpful to my teaching experience.
Thanks to your attention even my teaching demonstration wasn't insufficient.

ReplyDelete(When I stand in front of you guys, I am always nervous too much..I don't know why I am nervous like that much, but it is serious..;)
ReplyDeleteAnyway.. For my demonstration of today, I thought I am weak to teach reading and writing, especially. To teach reading and writing, teacher should focus on the context more than any other skills. So, it is hard to teach reading and writing with fun.
I think I sometimes teach English just for fun than contexts. It can be a way to improve motivation and interesting for English, but it also can be a way not to access to the contexts.
I thought I should be more calm.. and think about the ways to teach difficult contexts.

ReplyDeleteAt a first glace, I thought it would be easy to demonstrate my teaching just for five minutes and especially, teaching reading skills would not be a big deal because reading is one of the most familiar language skills for me to teach. But, after all, I have to confess that teaching demonstration for reading and writing was really a big burden, consuming a lot of my energy and I learned many things from other teachers' demonstration and had a really good chance to reflect my own teaching.
ReplyDeleteFirst, I noticed that I need to make my teaching more enjoyable and entertaining. Though my target students are high school students who have abstract thinking ability, my teaching was too seriously focused on logical thinking ability, not just on linguistic competence, which could make some students frustrated, loosing interest in learning English. I have to develop some interesting ways to increase and keep students' attention and motivation, like other teachers' using a ball or prize candy.
Second, it seemed that I failed to elicit students' voluntary participation. I didn't give enough verbal and non-verbal compliment and encouragement for students' doing and I paid attention more to correcting students' errors and explaining rather than making students' learning. And also. my facial expressions were not warm and encouraging(because I was nervous and made some mistakes during teaching demonstration) for student to risk making mistakes. I think I had better devise more student-centered activities in which students are free to try and error.
Third, even though I planned all the teaching and learning activities in detail, it was hard to explain key concepts and proceed my lesson as I planned. The activity in that you had to complete a paragraph using transitions, seemed difficult even to me. I guess that's because I was lack of preparing for teaching demonstration a little bit and there seems to be a gap between planning and practicing. So, more experience is needed to fill the gap, I think.
In summary, demonstrating my teaching and getting feedback from other teachers was a really useful activity to recognize benefits and faults in my teaching. Also, it was challenging in that I have to come up with more effective and interesting way to teach with. However, just insisting comfortable and easy ways without any revolution and challenge, will not naturally lead to successful teaching carrier. I hope that I keep my enthusiasm continuously and develop my teaching skills in a various way.
I selected my teaching material from American
ReplyDeleteHeadway Student Book2.
This book is very authentic I think.
I prepared according to the textbook.
I tried my teaching demonstrating by using the reading strategies such as brainstorming for eliciting students' prior vocabulary, touching on the title for extracting students' schema. using mime for stimulating students' motivation for the topic, skimming or skinning and matching the headings with the paragraphs for basic understandings of the text, asking some questions for reading comprehension etc.
But The processing was not smoothing and interesting because of my lack of teaching skill.
And like prof. Lisya's oral feedback I should have prepared songs or games etc. to filter class down. Besides it would have been better to use power point.
Anyway through teaching demonstration I realized that teaching is not focused on teachers' teaching but must be focused on students' status only. Because the purpose of teaching is not teaching itself but learners' learning.
Thank you all for enduring my awkward
teaching demo.

ReplyDeleteKorean teachers usually say that well organized lesson is just like the art. The content of lesson is excited to the students, the process of lesson is just like flowing of water and the students achive the goal of lesson in the end. What a excellent lesson is!
ReplyDeleteI always pursue such as this lesson but I almost frustrated. So now I remind again that teachers should never stop to learn for improvement their teaching.
I really was helped by feedback of other colleagues in my teaching demonstration. It was important point that as using various way( writing it on the board or putting some cards), I had to let students know what they were supposed to do in their activity.
The teaching demonstration was good chance to consider what I have to do to improve my student's competence and it was another learning for me about teaching of language.
Teaching demonstration was a great chance for me to reflect my teaching and also learn from excellent classmates. I realized again that preparing a class requires a number of tasks from establishing objectives and selecting materials to create activities.
ReplyDeleteAlthough my teaching demonstration had a problem, it gave me a valuable lesson. That was, preparation and double check before class are very important. As well as, during watching your teaching demonstration, I learned a lot from your innovative and creative teaching methods and activities. It will be good for us to build a community and share information constantly.
Above all, let me take this opportunity to thank you for your participation in my lesson. I made a great effort to prepare my teaching demonstration and really enjoyed making my lesson plan that I will be able to directly apply to my students. When I designed this unit, first of all, I focused on improvement of students reading and writing proficiency and also creative and critical thinking. I think reading allow students to develope their development of thinking power. Second, I want to motivate less confident students to read in English through story telling. Motivated students will participate in English class spontaneously. Third, I planned my unit is based on "i+1 Comprehensible input" of Krashen. Because students can also be stimulated by a little bit difficult task.
ReplyDeleteAfter teaching demonstration, I found that it gave me plenty of food for thought about teaching philosophy. I could reflect on my own teaching and also learn teaching skills and methods through other classmates. Sometime I felt my lesson didn't go on as if water flows because I didn't feel comfortable yet using English as the medium of instruction and there was also a difference between making lesson plan and practicing lesson plan. But teaching demonstration was a good chance to improve me as a learner and a teacher. I will be able to respond sensitively to students' viewpoint through this experience as a learner and help them enjoy learning English as a teacher. The feedback from other classmates and Dr.Seloni was useful to conduct the better my lesson.
Reflecting of me and Mobu’s teaching demonstration, I do feel great that we able to talk about the subject we would like to present to target student; teachers group, as we loved this article and saw the vision that we can also we can apply this system in our public education field.
ReplyDeleteAs we had comment from Dr. Seloni and Peer assess group, we wished we could had time for rehearsal to divide the part we present. And also, offering information of vocabulary from us rather than tell them to find while they reading.
As, we targeting NNEST as student of our class, I wished to have real critical essay from our article as well.

ReplyDeleteMy teaching demonstration with Ji-hye was really good experience to me. With doing that, I thought that my speaking ability should be grown. And Through watching others demonstration, I also learned another teaching
ReplyDeleteskills and good ideas. It's like broaden my outlook.
Choosing text from familiar fable was goodpoint, I think. That makes students' affective filter low. But actually, that can be too easy for middle school students. Dissatisfied point is that I didn't look students continuously. That was one of the weak points, like Dr. Seloni said.
I think that's from unprepared. I should have prepared more^^;;;
Anyway, Thank you for participating in our class!
Reflective Writing after teaching demonstration
ReplyDeleteBefore the teaching demonstration
I panicked, because I thought I had a short time to prepare for my demonstration lesson. But I realized that everybody was in the same situation. It gave me enough confidence to do a demonstration lesson. Another difficulty was to find appropriate articles. I spent most of my time looking for an appropriate article, because it was the first time that I had searched for teaching resource material and I did not have experience teaching, I was not used to it. Moreover, I also found it difficult to prepare for a lesson to finish within five minutes - including an explanation of the purpose and subject of the lesson and proper activities related to the subject.
During the teaching demonstration
I enjoyed teaching the lesson which I prepared. I liked the interaction with students in the class. It made me aware of different possible student responses - expected or unexpected. When students reacted as I expected I was happy, because it was what I had prepared for. However, when the students reacted in a different way from how I expected at first I was embarrassed, but I was happy because I managed to deal with it eventually.
After the teaching demonstration
I was happy to finish within five minutes, covering everything and especially students' good cooperation and good oral and written feedback. However, I was disappointed with my speaking - especially my pronunciation. When I'm nervous my weakness (pronunciation) is accentuated, so I plan to improve my English speaking skills. I need to think about how and what I want to say before I speak, and when I speak I need to practice speaking slowly and pronounce each word carefully.
Thank you all for your cooperation and feedback
When I try to choose my lesson for teaching demonstration, I spent a lot of time to choose the article. Because I was not sure which one is good for demonstration with good activities.
ReplyDeleteAnd when I finally found suitable lesson, I felt kind of reliefed.:) And then when I present, I wanted to report and share information about some perspectives with my PPT file, too. But we didn't have enough time, so I was rushing my self in teaching demonstration. And I think I spoke too fast because I was nervous. People around me sometime tells me that when I teach, I tend to speak fast. So I am trying to talk slowy.
Anyway, frmo this demonstration, I learned a lot my self. I feel like I am becoming better English teacher whether it is true or not . :)
I'm learning fascinatiog things through this course.(But I need improve my writing badly)
First of all, I really want to appreciate active participation in my teaching demonstration to Dr. Selony and my 702 friends . Especially, to Simon, who are famous for his sharp criticism both in "American Idol" and "OSU-PNU TESOL". That's true, believe me.:-) I have often seen that formality conceals truth, and, thus, the truthe is sometimes very difficult for friends to tell. However, Mr. Simon overcame this very well. I appreciate it to him once again.
ReplyDeleteThis was not the first time teaching demonstration to me. Having taught English in some middle schools, I could practice how to teach English to middle school students, although most of the classes are done in Korean and English blended. However I think change in the position and the role makes a big difference. Thus, even if I was expected to be accustomed to demonstrating teaching due to my experiences in the field, whenever I stand in front of my TESOL friends and professors, I cannot hide my nervousness. I have to regard them as my students, but since I recognize unconsciously that actually they are not real students, even they must be betther than me, it seems to make me less smile and forget to give praise to such a good student like "Min-ju", "Sorry, Sara!"
However, still I believe, as a teacher and learner, I can learn from errors, and these errors in practice will make me a better teacher someday. This teaching demonstration gave me a good chance to commit mistakes which I, if not, must commit in the actual classroom. In addition, I am sure we all was able to share our friends' creative teaching techniques in approaching different level of students. So I really want to ask you with all my politeness whether I can use your techniques in my future teaching, if you,of course, don't have a kind of copyright or patent to your own technique.:)
Through the teaching demonstration, I think I have to try to find better way to give satisfaction to my student customers. Therefore, smiling, giving praise, finding alternative fillers, and vivid voice tone will be challenges to me. I will try to get over these flaws in my teaching. After the teaching demonstration, I can get courage from Christine despite Simon's acrimonious criticism.^^ She said to me I have sweet voice enough to soothe my students. Thank you, Cristine. It was really really interesting and nutritious time and I really enjoyed it. Thank you Dr. Seloni. Next time, please give us an opportunity to respond to our feedback if time permits.:)
Thank Ryon and Dr.Seloni's comment today. It was my first experience to have those reflective comments in my life. I actually want those because whenever I am in class to teach students, I sometimes wonder whether they are satisfied with my way to teach. I also found that making a decent powerpoint is important not to look novice and checking how well students understand is quiet blur with giving a few questions so it needs more qualified and well organized questions.
ReplyDeleteAt first, I would like to appreciate Dr. seloni and all the classmates including my poor partner, kenny for putting up with my awkward demonstration.
ReplyDeleteWhile preparing,to be frank, I was a bit frustrated colliding against the limitation of my 'authentic' teaching situation, and ended up just adding some more visual material and handouts to what I currently do in my genuine class.
This demonstration has left many questions and concerns about my classes to be in the future, and will influence on them a lot.
I wish I'd had enough time to rebuild my original ppt but I think it's just such an awful excuse, which some professor might say 'bullshit'. :-(
Anyhow it was worth doing and thanks to that demonstration, for the very first time during 8 years of my teaching period, I reflected on my teaching, embarrassed.
Hayley and Kenny,
ReplyDeleteI think you have done a terrific job yesterday. As I mentioned in the class, you included many interesting activities which kept our interest till the end of your presentation. There is no need to feel embarrased. There is always room for improvement and reflection for every teacher, including very experienced teachers.
Keep up the good work.
Great comments, Ryan. I enjoyed reading your insights and reflections on your teaching demo. And yes, sometime we need people like Simon to give us some "real" constructive critisizm:) I always feel like I am hungry for meaningful feedback from my colleagues and students. It's good to hear that you are the same.
ReplyDeleteI presented “Baby Names Over the Years”with Jenny in the class. This is for 6th elementary school students who has advanced level. The stroy was interesting becuase students not only acquire English skills but also learn American baby names. As you probably know that elementary school students can be bored when they learn very academic English. So that's why we choose that topic. After reading we also sugggest discussing and Grammer check for their reading skills. It is very good experience for me. Thank you for giving me the opportunity.
